New Jersey

きのうは車でニュージャージーに行きました。マンハッタンの対岸にミツワという大きな日本のスーパーがあります。
Visited New Jersey to do some shopping at Japanese Supermarket "Mitsuwa".

高速道路を降りる所が複雑でよくわからず、家から30分ほどで行けるはずなのですが、遠回りしてしまいました。。。マンハッタンがきれいに見えます。
The scenery of Manhattan is beautiful.


夜景もとてもきれいです。ブルックリンから見るマンハッタンもきれいなのだそうですが、近過ぎるとのこと。ニュージャージーが程良い距離でちょうどいいそうです。
The night view is also great. I heard Manhattan was too close from Brooklyn and that the view from New Jersey was better.




We saw a cruise ship of Carnival Cruise.

昼間はちょうどカーニバル・クルーズのクルーズ船が航行中でした。

Soccer

I had a chance to watch football game (or I should say soccer game since I'm in the US :-)
Surprisingly, it was pretty crowded. Everybody likes soccer...
Well, it was US All Stars vs Man U but it seems most of them got delighted every time Man U shooted goals.

全米オールスター対マンチェスター・ユナイテッドの試合を見に行くことができました。サッカーは意外と人気スポーツです。ほとんどの人はマンUを観に来ていたみたいでしたが。（でもあとでアメリカに長年住んでいる方に聞いたところ、このスタジアムはRed Bull というMajor League Soccer の本拠地ですが、彼らの普段の試合はガラガラなのだそうです。）

ハーフタイムに出てきました。





David Beckham who is now playing in LA Galaxy is of course very popular. He almost scored a goal but couldn't make it. It was one-sided game of 4-0 but I think people enjoyed very much watching Beckham and Rooney playing.

アメリカ側でベッカムが出場していて、惜しいところまで攻め上がっていましたが、点は取れず。終わってみれば一方的な４－０でしたが、マンＵはルーニーもでていたし、観客はみんな満足していました。

100 degree

The temperature went up over 100 degree (around 37 centigrade, I think.) for the first time in NY this year. Too hot to walk around. New York City put information on the website regarding "cooling centers" to avoid heat on the street.

今年初めてニューヨークで１００度を超えたそうです。摂氏３７度くらいです。体感温度にすればたぶん４０度は超えているでしょう。さすがに暑いです。ニューヨーク市は熱中症予防に「クーリング・センター情報」をウェブサイトに掲載し始めました。図書館のような公共機関が「クーリング・センター」になっていました。

World Cup Final

今日の話題はもちろんワールドカップ決勝戦。
FIFA World Cup Final!

最初に行ったNevada Smith http://www.nevadasmiths.net/ は有名なスポーツ・バーだったので、2時過ぎに着いたら（試合は２：４５開始です）、すでに長蛇の列。

First, we tried Nevada Smith at Union Square but there was a long line. The bar was already full and we couldn't go in.



仕方なく、近くに中継をするところがないか探したところ、ありました。普通のパブっぽかったですが、テレビを５～６台置いて、試合開始前から盛り上がっていました。入った時はちょうどアメリカの国歌斉唱の時だったので、皆が大合唱していました。

We luckily found a pub nearby where they had 5 or 6 TV sets When we got in there, everybody was singing American national anthem.


日本の人は少しだけいたと思いますが、ほとんどアメリカ人。サッカーは意外と人気のようです。
アメリカの人たちの応援は、もちろん定番の"USA! USA!" というもののほか、"We can do it!" とか、"I believe that we will win!"というのを歌のように叫んだりしていました。

There were few Japanese and most of them were Americans. Didn't know that foot ball was so popular here. Or are they foot ball fans just for today? People were yelling "USA! USA!", "We can do it!" and "I believe that we will win!"

なので、劇的に日本がPKを制して試合終了になった瞬間、それまで大盛り上がりだったパブは、一気にしんみりとなってしまいました。
Right after the game finished by exciting PKs, the whole pub became almost silent.


アメリカが優勝していたら、Union Square はもう少しお祭り騒ぎになっていたりしたのでしょうか？

Japanese Green Tea Seminar

On July 14th, Shizuoka prefecture held a seminar in New York regarding tourism and tea in Shizuoka. Our office cooperated with them to gather audience.
Note: Shizuoka prefecture is a "home of Mt. Fuji" and you can easily visit there by Japanese High-Speed Rail, Bullet Train.

It was quite popular and we had to say no to some of those who wanted to register at the last minute.

思った以上に参加希望者が多く、あとから申し込まれた人はお断りしなければならないほどでした。煎茶や抹茶、温かいお茶、冷たいお茶などが紹介されたほか、かわいい茶器の紹介なども。



Today, another we promoted Japan in another event at JFK Airport.

本日は、某社イベントで、日本の宣伝。
昔佐渡島の「鼓童」で太鼓を勉強したという米国生まれの日本人の方による太鼓のパフォーマンスはかっこよかったです。
「某社」はエアラインということもあり、日本にご理解があり、震災の影響を心配する質問は一切なかったのが印象的でした。

Walking by the River

　ニューヨークもこの時期は昼間は30度を超え、時に35度くらいにまでなります。そういう時は朝から結構暑いので、駅まで歩くのはなかなか大変です。そこで、今朝はルートを変えてみました。

It gets quite hot in New York at this time of the year. Sometimes it becomes nearly 35 degrees or even higher than that. It's not easy to walk to the station in such a day. So this morning, I took a different route.

A rabbit!

There are nothing special for Direct Mails. We do have them in Japan and so do we here in NY.

But there is a strange way of delivering ads (at least in Westchester, perhaps not in Manhattan).

ニューヨークには（少なくともウェストチェスターには）、変わった投げ込み広告があります。

Oops, this photo is upside down - anyway, the other day, this bag with papers inside was thrown into our front yard by a truck driver. He does this to every house around ours. And these are the stuff we found inside the bag - the advertisements of nearby convenience stores, super markets, and so on.

トラックドライバーが家々の前庭に何か投げ込んでいるので何かと思ったら、ビニール袋に入っていたのは、こんな広告でした。コンビニやスーパーや家電量販店のチラシです。文字通り「投げ込み」ですが、日本だったら新聞の折り込みに入っているようなもの。こちらでは新聞を家で取らずに、ニューススタンドで買う人も多いから、こういう別形態の広告が出てくるのでしょうか。

Detroit

　こちらに来て初めてのNYの外への出張は、デトロイトでした。とある会合で、日本の観光の現状についてのお話をしてきました。
My first business trip outside of NY was to Detroit. I talked about current (normal) situation of tourism in Japan.

　東京の現在の放射線量は、NYよりも低いのですが、仙台のレベルだってNYよりも低いようです。北京やソウルでも同じ。それだけ、大部分の日本は問題ない状況になっているにもかかわらず、あまりそういう「普通の日本」はニュースネタにならないこともあり、多くのアメリカ人はまだ知らないように思えます。
The current radiation level of Tokyo or Sendai is lower than that in NY, Beijing or in Seoul but unfortunately, not many American people know this kind of info. "Normal Japan" cannot be news topics here.

　デトロイトは私は初めてだったのですが、ミシガン州の振興をされている方によると、「アメリカにもし4時間しか滞在できないとしたら、ヘンリー・フォード博物館に行くべきだ」とおっしゃっていました。自動車だけでなく、アメリカの歴史全体が学べる素晴らしい博物館だとか。行ったことのある日本の方も賛成されていました。見せていただいたミシガン州の自然も、本当に美しいものでした。残念ながら今回の出張は日帰りだったので、どこにも行けませんでしたが。。。。空港にあったヘンリー・フォード・グッズのお店も、行こうと思ったとたんに閉店になってしまったので、看板だけ写真を撮った次第。

空港のターミナル間を結ぶスカイ・トレインのようなものは、なんとなくフォルムが近未来的でかっこよかったです。

Anime, Manga

　本日はとあるレセプションに出席。ご一緒したコロンビア大学の日本研究の先生にお伺いしたところ、日本に興味を持つ学生は、減ってはいないとのこと。最近中国が台頭してきているので、日本研究をやる人は減ってきているのかと思ったのですが、そういうわけではないそうです。理由はアニメ、マンガ。こういうポップカルチャーから日本に興味を持って、日本研究に入っていく人がおおいとか。かつては大学院生くらいでないと日本に留学しなかったけれども、今は学部生、あるいは高校生レベルでも留学する人はかなりいるそうです。意外と日本はがんばっているようで、うれしく思いました。

I was wondering if the number of people who have interests in Japan was decreasing. Today, I met a lady at Columbia University who teaches Japan Study at a reception. She said lots of youths are interested in anime and manga culture and thus want to study about Japan. More people go study in Japan at early age. Glad to know that.

Express Train

This is Grand Central Station which I use everyday. From here to Scarsdale, there are several kinds of rail services. During rush hour, express trains stop at Scarsdale and go to Grand Central Station. Such trains are usually congested but you can sit down anyway. There are local services as well. Some express trains do not stop at Scarsdale but stop at other stations which my train skips.

Confusingly, both express and local trains stop at the same platform. Yesterday, I took a train back home without thinking much. Then I realized it doesn't stop anywhere until White Plains which is two stations after Scarsdale and I had to take a taxi to reach to my home finally. Lesson learnt: make sure you get on the right train.

気をつけていないと、自分の駅に止まらない電車に乗ってしまう羽目に陥ります。携帯でMetro North Railroad のサイトを見て、次の電車はどこに止まるかチェックしなければなりません。（ホームの入り口か中央コンコースに行けば、止まる駅は掲示されているんですけど。でもホームはコンコースと違う階だったりするので、面倒なのです。）

Rabbit Visited

　庭先に動物が出るという話を何人かの方から聞いていたのですが・・・ほんとにウサギが出現！近づくと逃げてしまいそうだったので、iPhoneでがんばってズームしたのですが、わかるでしょうか？子ウサギでした。しばらく草を食べていましたが、うちの子どもたちがそーっと近づくと、猛ダッシュで逃げて行ってしまいました。

　昨日はリスも走っていました。夜には蛍も飛んでいました。都心からそれほど離れているわけではないのですが、ぜいたくな環境です。

We saw a rabbit in our yard today. Hope you can find it in this photo. Yesterday, a squirrel came, too. And at night time, you can see firefly flying.

My New Home!

We moved to our home from the hotel yesterday. Since we still don't have our beds yet, we sleep in the sleeping bags. And still no tables, so a box of TV set we newly bought became our tentative table. It's like camping inside the house. But at least it's nice to be at home.

Today, an engineer of Cablevision came to our house and set up TV, telephone and internet connection.

I drove a little for the first time after nearly 15 years. So scary!! I do need serious practice to get a driver's license.

7月1日に引越しました！ベッドもテーブルもまだないので多少不便ですが、テレビやネット、電話がつながったので、少し落ち着きました。目下最大の問題は、運転免許をどーやって取るか。ペーパードライバー歴が長いので、とっても怖いです！！
