Hurricane and Typhoon

It was nearly one month ago when The Hurricane Irene hit in and around New York.  It was quite a storm but I thought it was like a normal typhoon we had from time to time in Tokyo.  So I was surprised when the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) shut down all the trains and subways in New York City before the hurricane reached to the area.  The hurricane came here after midnight of Saturday August 27 (i.e. early Sunday morning  of August 28 before dawn) but the subway stopped since Saturday afternoon when there was no wind and little rain in downtown New York.  It was explained that MTA shut down transportation so early because the trains need to reach to the depot and MTA employees also need to go back home before the storm arrives.

ニューヨークにハリケーン・アイリーンが来たのはちょうど1カ月ほど前になります。日本でも報道されていたように、かなり大きな嵐ではありましたが、東京ではよくある台風レベルという感じだったので、Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA)がだいぶ早い段階から電車をすべてストップさせたのには驚きました。ハリケーンは8月28日の未明にニューヨーク市に到達しましたが、その前日のお昼には地下鉄もすべてストップしていました。電車を事前に倉庫に入れる必要があり、職員もハリケーンが来る前に帰宅させる必要があるから、というのがMTAの説明でした。

MTA and New York City Government reacted so early because they were criticized when heavy snow storm hit the city last winter.  Some of the residents even in Manhattan were also required to evacuate from their residents.  But fortunately there was nothing serious happened at least in Manhattan.

どうやら、この前の冬の大雪の際に無策だったことをかなり批判されたために、ニューヨーク市やMTAは今回は早めに手を打ったということのようです。マンハッタンの中でも、建物から強制避難された住民もいたほどですが、幸いマンハッタン内では深刻な問題は起こりませんでした。

On the contrary, lots of things happened outside of the City.  My area had a power outage for a couple of days.  What surprised me was that people were not upset about this situation.  My next door even  has a power generator.  They told me that there was a power outage in March last year and at that time there was no electricity for four days.  So this time, they bought a generator beforehand.  Lucky them!  My next door family has been living here for about twenty years and they said they had a power outage for "half a dozen" times.  It means six times in twenty years?  That's quite a lot.

マンハッタンの外ではいろいろな問題が起こりました。我が家の周辺は停電に遭いましたが、どうやら普通のことのようで、誰も大騒ぎはしていませんでした。お隣の家などは自家発電機まで持っていらっしゃいます。聞いたところでは昨年の3月に停電があり、4日間電気がなかったとのことで、今回は事前に発電機を導入したのだとか。20年近くここに住んで6回くらい停電があったそうです。

I think in Japan, electric companies usually cut down trees near the power lines so we won't have power outages so often.  Here in New York (or in the States), they don't cut down trees.  So in our case, one of the branches of the trees fell down and cut the power line.  MTA also had a trouble of flood on the train tracks.  This YouTube of Tuckahoe Station is incredible.  This station is near from my house (two stations from ours).  I feel there is something wrong in the rail structure.  I don't think this would happen often in Japan...

日本では、電力会社は電線のそばの木の枝は切り落とすのではないかと思うのですが、こちらではあまりそういうことをしていないようで、我が家の停電も、電線のそばの木の枝が落ちて電線を切ってしまったことが原因でした。MTAは電車の線路が洪水になるというトラブルにも見舞われました。Tuckahoe Stationという我が家から２つ先の駅のYouTubeの映像はなかなか驚きです。駅や線路の構造上の問題ではないかという気がします。こういうことは日本ではあまり起こらないのではないでしょうか？

There is a discussion in Japan whether we need a dam to get ready for the flood as big as once in 100 years.  Here in the US, people think that if a big flood happens, that's a bad luck and all we have to do is just to restore it.  I am not sure which case costs less.  But in case of Irene, many people died which could have been saved.

 
日本では、100年に1度の洪水にそなえてダムを造るべきかどうかという議論がありますが、アメリカでは、そういう洪水が起これば運が悪かったのであり、事前にわざわざ準備するよりも、事が起こってから対応すればよい、という考え方のようです。どちらがコストが低くてすむかは何とも言えませんが、ハリケーン・アイリーンの場合は、多くの方が亡くなっており、これらはたとえばインフラがしっかりしていたら、もしかしたら救えたのかも知れないという気がします。

Ramen etc.

ものすごく暑い日は、ほんの２、３週間程度で、8月に入ってからはどんどん涼しくなってくる気がします。日中はそれでも汗ばむ陽気の時もまだ多いものの、朝晩は少し冷え込んできました。昨日などは朝の電車のシートに暖房が入っていたような・・・？

It was very hot for a few weeks in July, but now it's getting cooler and cooler. Sometimes it becomes quite hot during the day but it is quite cool in the mornings and in the evenings. The seats on the train in the morning yesterday was even heated up by the heater.

そういう寒い日は温かいものを食べたくなりますが、先日たまたま入ったお店ではラーメンが売られていました。日本でラーメンに入っているお肉は豚肉が多いと思うのですが、鶏肉でした。写真のラーメンは具が何か見えるでしょうか？油揚げが入っています。そのほかには、ニンジンやブロッコリー、キュウリまで入っていました。アメリカ人はブロッコリーは生で食べます。ニンジンも含めて入っている野菜はみんな生だったと思います。日本だったら炒めていると思うのですが。

On a cool day, you want to eat something hot. The other day, I found a place where they sell ramen. If you have it in Japan, they usually have pork but here they had chicken. There were vegetables such as carrots, broccoli, cucumbers - all raw. I think we usually saute in Japan...

お昼時には、時々道端で試飲用ドリンクを配っていたりします。今日はつぶつぶ入りのオレンジジュースが配られていました。

During lunch time, sometimes people deliver bottles of drinks for tasting. Today I got orange juice.

この前は、ザクロのドリンクが配られていました。これはちょっと人工的な味で、はずれでした。

The other day, I got a drink of pomegranate - this was too artificial taste.

American Museum of Natural History

日曜日にAmerican Museum of Natural History に行きました。とても広かったので、全部は見切れませんでした。哺乳類の展示では、たくさんの種類の世界中の哺乳類のはく製が展示されています。

We visited American Museum of Natural History on Sunday. It was too big to see all of the exhibition.


地図を見ながらどちらに行くかうろうろと探しながら歩いていましたが、こんなすぐれ物のアプリもあったということを後から知りました。

The museum has a fancy app but I didn't know about this when I visited there.

子どもには恐竜の展示が人気です。特別展をやっていましたが、特別展でなくても十分楽しめます。

Dinosaur part is particularly popular among kids. They had a special exhibition, but even the normal exhibition was good enough.

Bronx Zoo

もうすぐUSオープンが始まります。昨日は空から広告が・・・ブロンクス動物園に行った時のことでした。

The US Open Tournament is coming soon. Yesterday, we saw an advertizement in the sky when we arrived at Bronx Zoo.

ニューヨークには、セントラル・パークやクイーンズなどにいくつか動物園や水族館があって、ファミリー・メンバーの年会員になると、入場料や駐車場チケットなどかなりの特典がつきます。

There are several zoos and aquarium in New York and you can get discount if you become annual family member.


ブロンクス動物園は、鳥がかなり充実していました。広い公園の一角が動物園になっているので、緑に囲まれています。

In Bronx Zoo, there were many kinds of birds from around the world.

キリンやライオン、トラなどもいました。

New York Chef and Japanese Knives

I learned that Sakai City in Osaka Prefecture is famous for their knives, one of their traditional craftwork. They are now visiting New York City to promote knives. I heard that their knives were popular among top chefs.

大阪の堺市は伝統工芸品の刃物が有名なのだそうです。今、ニューヨークに堺市の刃物のプロモーションに来られていますが、堺の包丁はニューヨークのトップシェフの間でも人気なのだそうです。

One of the chef who loves knives from Sakai is Michael Romano at Union Square Cafe.
堺の包丁を愛用しているシェフの一人は、ユニオンスクエア・カフェのマイケル・ロマーノ氏です。USCは東京にもお店があります。（知らなかったのですが。）

He spoke about Japanese knives at an event in New York.

先月には、ロマーノ氏はほかのニューヨークのスター・シェフとともに、釜石市で炊き出しを実施しました。

Musical in the Park

夏の間、毎週木曜日のお昼に、ニューヨーク市立図書館横のブライアント・パークでは、ブロードウェイからミュージカルがやってきます。ここでは普段からいろいろなイベントをやっていますが、内容は@BryantParkNYC でツイートされています。今日はマンマ・ミーア！の予定だったので、お昼休みに行ってみました。

During summer time,musical teams from Broadway come to the Bryant Park next to New York City Library. Their program can be confirmed @BryantParkNYC. Today, they played Mamma Mia! so I tried to have a glimpse of th em during lunch time (Bryant Park is in front of my office.)

公園にはたくさんの人が集まっていて、サンドイッチを食べながら、ミュージカルの一節に聞き入っていました。ちょっと遠いので、歌い手たちはあまり見えないかも知れませんが、雰囲気はわかるでしょうか？

Many people were in the park, enjoying listening to their singing Manma Mia! and Dancing Queen. I hope you can also feel the lively atmosphere. I saw this musical in Japan and I saw Meryl Streep's film but I've never seen Broadway musical. I want to see it!

Animals and Insects

I saw raccoon near my house. At first, I thought it was a fat cat. But it wasn't. I came closer and saw it face to face. It didn't ran away so I tried to find my iPhone. But unfortunately, it slowly went down into a hole between the pavement and sewer grate.

タヌキを見ました。最初は太った猫かと思ったのですが、違いました。随分近くに寄っても逃げなかったので、写真に撮ろうと思ったのですが、残念ながら、歩道と下水口の格子の間の隙間の穴にもぐりこんでしまいました。

Rabbits and squirrels are quite common. I heard there were deers around here. These days we often hear the voices of cicadas (the volume of their voices is much much smaller than the ones in Japan). At night, frogs are very noisy.

ウサギやリスは当たり前ですが、シカも時々出るのだそうです。（ゴミは蓋つきのバケツで出すことになっているのは、動物に荒らされないためだそうです。）最近は、昼間はセミ、夜はカエルの声でいっぱいです。セミは日本のものとは種類が違うので、さわさわさわ・・・という感じのおとなしい声です。カエルは結構うるさいです。
