New York Chef and Japanese Knives

I learned that Sakai City in Osaka Prefecture is famous for their knives, one of their traditional craftwork. They are now visiting New York City to promote knives. I heard that their knives were popular among top chefs.

大阪の堺市は伝統工芸品の刃物が有名なのだそうです。今、ニューヨークに堺市の刃物のプロモーションに来られていますが、堺の包丁はニューヨークのトップシェフの間でも人気なのだそうです。

One of the chef who loves knives from Sakai is Michael Romano at Union Square Cafe.
堺の包丁を愛用しているシェフの一人は、ユニオンスクエア・カフェのマイケル・ロマーノ氏です。USCは東京にもお店があります。（知らなかったのですが。）

Japanese Green Tea Seminar

On July 14th, Shizuoka prefecture held a seminar in New York regarding tourism and tea in Shizuoka. Our office cooperated with them to gather audience.
Note: Shizuoka prefecture is a "home of Mt. Fuji" and you can easily visit there by Japanese High-Speed Rail, Bullet Train.

It was quite popular and we had to say no to some of those who wanted to register at the last minute.

思った以上に参加希望者が多く、あとから申し込まれた人はお断りしなければならないほどでした。煎茶や抹茶、温かいお茶、冷たいお茶などが紹介されたほか、かわいい茶器の紹介なども。



Today, another we promoted Japan in another event at JFK Airport.

本日は、某社イベントで、日本の宣伝。
昔佐渡島の「鼓童」で太鼓を勉強したという米国生まれの日本人の方による太鼓のパフォーマンスはかっこよかったです。
「某社」はエアラインということもあり、日本にご理解があり、震災の影響を心配する質問は一切なかったのが印象的でした。

Anime, Manga

　本日はとあるレセプションに出席。ご一緒したコロンビア大学の日本研究の先生にお伺いしたところ、日本に興味を持つ学生は、減ってはいないとのこと。最近中国が台頭してきているので、日本研究をやる人は減ってきているのかと思ったのですが、そういうわけではないそうです。理由はアニメ、マンガ。こういうポップカルチャーから日本に興味を持って、日本研究に入っていく人がおおいとか。かつては大学院生くらいでないと日本に留学しなかったけれども、今は学部生、あるいは高校生レベルでも留学する人はかなりいるそうです。意外と日本はがんばっているようで、うれしく思いました。

I was wondering if the number of people who have interests in Japan was decreasing. Today, I met a lady at Columbia University who teaches Japan Study at a reception. She said lots of youths are interested in anime and manga culture and thus want to study about Japan. More people go study in Japan at early age. Glad to know that.
